The Canadian Swim Patrol—consisting of the Rookie, Ranger, and Star levels—is a Lifesaving Society youth swim program that bridges the gap between basic swim lessons and formal lifeguarding. It acts as an on-ramp and prerequisite-friendly stepping stone to advanced awards like Bronze Star and Bronze Medallion.
Rookie, Ranger, and Star map directly to Swimmer 7, Swimmer 8, and Swimmer 9 in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program.
Rookie Patrol (Swimmer 7): Focuses on 50 m stroke swims, a 25 m obstacle swim, 15 m object carry, basic first aid (conscious victims, bleeding, EMS), and initial fitness workouts
Ranger Patrol (Swimmer 8): Advances to 75 m swims, a lifesaving medley, object support, buoyant aid rescues, and first aid for unconscious victims, shock, and obstructed airways
Star Patrol (Swimmer 9): Demands higher physical conditioning and features refined 100 m swims, defense methods, victim removals, heavier object carries, first aid for bone/joint and respiratory emergencies, and extended fitness workouts
- Water Proficiency: Endurance swims, surface dives, sculling, and eggbeater kicks.
- First Aid: Practical emergency response, primary assessments, and injury treatment.
